We are currently undergoing a period of transition in our doctors. Dr Helen Akester retired at the end of September and, as previously announced, we are pleased that Dr David Tibbits will be joining the partnership in January. In the meantime we are covering the extra clinics with locum doctors.
On top of this, Dr Jess Whilock remains on maternity leave and Dr Gareth Roberts has needed to take some time off at short notice.
The result of all this is that you may not be able to see your usual doctor in the next few weeks. We are well staffed with locums who can deal with any medical issue, especially urgent concerns but also can follow up routine issues and ongoing care. Please bear with us but continue to contact the practice as usual if you need medical care.
We are all working very hard to ensure we continue to deliver good quality care and hope to have a more permanent workforce back in place in the new year.

Nasal spray vaccine programme
The UK Health Security Agency suggests that the nasal spray vaccine programme, which offers very good protection against flu, may also help contribute to reductions in the rates of Group A streptococcus infections among children.
Your child is eligible for their vaccine at the surgery and we would therefore recommend booking your child for their vaccine.
Lower risk older children should have been offered their vaccine through school Childhood Flu Programme for School Age Immunisation Service covering Durham, Darlington, Teesside, North Yorkshire and City of York - Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (hdft.nhs.uk)

New Guidance On Mask Wearing
In line with recent NHS Guidance, we have removed the need for patients and staff to wear face masks whilst at the Practice. We do however continue to ask that patients with symptoms of covid or other respiratory infections (such as cough, fever, sore throat, cold etc) do continue to wear a face mask whilst in the practice, to protect other vulnerable patients and colleagues. When you attend the Practice there may be patients and staff who continue to wear a face covering and we ask that you respect their need to do so. Our staff will be happy to wear one in consultations if you would prefer them to do so.

Vaccinations for 16 to 17 year olds
We are aware that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation has recommended the extension of the Covid-19 vaccination programme to 16 and 17 year olds. We are awaiting further guidance from NHS England on when the programme will commence and how the vaccinations will be administered to this age group.
Please do not contact your GP – eligible young people will be contacted when the programme commences to advise on the next steps.
Online Services
Now we have the new IT system installed at the Practice Patient Access no longer works as it is not compatible. The NHS app can be downloaded or an alternative to Patient Access is available called systmonline. Please email the Surgery rather than phoning at hnyicb-ny.drakesterpractice@nhs.net if you would like setting up for this and we will respond as quickly as we can. Thank you for your patience.
We have been receiving a lot of calls today from patients who have received a letter about covid vaccination asking them for lots of personal information, including their bank details.
We would NEVER ask for your bank details. We have informed the police about this, but would be grateful if you could share the information about this scam far and wide to protect patients and also allow our phone lines to not be overrun with these queries.

Physiotherapy
We currently have plenty of availability for face to face appointments or telephone calls with our local physiotherapy team.
If you are struggling with a muscular or joint injury, or low back pain, and think you would benefit from their advice please call the surgery to make an appointment with them. It is amazing how much can be done to help start improving things, even at a distance!

Yorkshire Health Network Extended Access
Extra appointments are being provided in the evening and at weekends from premises in Harrogate and Ripon, making it easier for you to get an appointment at a time that suits you. The service is an extension of your GP practice and offers pre-bookable, routine primary care appointments with a range of clinicians including, GPs, nurses, pharmacists and healthcare assistants.
